In shock, she struggled to hold her breathing in check. Hearing her ragged pants, he swung his weapon to face her, and she held her own, point it towards him, the barrel shaking slightly as she inched towards him. “I don’t believe you,” she gasped.

“Oh, it’s true, honey,” he grinned, and she recognized the few teeth that were exposed.

“You/re the one from the store,” she accused.

“Yup,” he continued to smile, pleased with his prize. “You didn’ really love that guy, did you?”

She stared at him, still clutching the pistol, thinking about the tall blond man who had become a huge part of her existence. She needed him almost as much as she needed air, and the thought of his passing paralyzed her. “I said, I don’t believe, you.: Fighting her anguish, she raised her arm and leveled the barrel at him.

Laughing, the stranger stepped towards her, “You ain’ gonna shoot me,: he speculated, “If you was, you already woulda.” Pausing, he waited for her response.

“Don’t move!” she called loudly, attempting to retreat but finding herself blocked by the wooden trough behind her.

He nodded, laughing as he took another giant step.

Pulling the trigger, she caught her breath at the sight of the blood spewing from the back of his head, and the sound of his body falling to the ground.

AN EXCERPT FROM SHAKAZHAN BY DELLANI OAKES

pizap-com14863367437151

“Nonsense, Aisu! No one could’ve been expected to think straight in your circumstances!”

“I’m not just anyone. I haven’t been for sixty years. I serve the people and I’ve let them down. I abused their confidence in me.” He rose, gesturing expansively.

Ysilvalov rose, following him as he paced.

He turned, finding her behind him; arms crossed angrily over her chest. He stopped in surprise.

“I am ashamed of you, Aisu.” She glared at him.

“Of me? Why?”

“You’re indulging in self-recrimination and doubt. You don’t have the luxury. Instead of berating yourself, you should take action. Where is the Aisu who is calm, decisive, in charge? Did I leave him behind at Shakazhan? If so, I’ll commandeer Hecate and go back for him! This other Aisulov isn’t the man I respect and love!”

“Perhaps this one is the real me. Perhaps the old one died with my family and my world!”

“That’s ridiculous! I saw how you handled the crowd the day we returned. Didn’t you see how they love you, respect you and look to you for guidance? I’ve watched you daily as you put the pieces of this galaxy back together with one hand and help me plan our wedding with the other.” Her eyes grew tender. “I know this Aisu isn’t the one who has served the people so long. Could a coward have squashed the Rebellion of Trivolia? Could an indecisive man have successfully mediated the strike at Huber Mines? Could a man who wasn’t fit to hold this office…”

Aisulov held up his hand, laughing gently. “Enough, Silva, enough! Your point is made!”

Taking the lapels of his jacket softly in her hands, she drew near him. “Could a man not fit to hold this office hold my heart?”

AN EXCERPT FROM THE ANGLER AND THE OWL BY VIV DREWA

pizap-com14862180119011

John left to go talk to the boatmen since he’s the only one who speaks fluent Portuguese, and he arranged the trip to begin with. France speaks some Portuguese but not much.        John made sure three of the canoes would be for France and Cathy’s group. They don’t have very much equipment so three canoes were plenty. He instructed the boatmen to take these three first, and John’s group would follow. The remaining four would be for John’s group.

John knew France was about six hours away from where she wanted to go, and his destination should be approximately two days just to get to the fishing spot and another 8 hours to go to the arapaima farm. He’s only planning on staying five days instead of the three weeks he normally does. John had been invited to be on several talk shows and needed to be back home. He planned to come back here if he didn’t catch the fish he wanted at a later time.

France and Cathy helped Doc and Joe get their gear loaded onto their respective canoes. The third canoe would be just for Cathy’s group. Doc and Andy will be in the canoe with her gear, and France and Tony with theirs.

John’s team loaded all their equipment on their canoes. Mark and Paul get into the one which has the cameras and some of the recording equipment. Phil got into the one with other recording supplies. Dave’s canoe carried the mosquito netting, tents and other equipment. John rides, with his old friend and guide, Davi, in the one with the medical supplies and food. Since the water might come over the sides of the canoes these will have to be watched and bailed to keep their equipment dry.

Cathy didn’t like the look of the carved-out canoe. “Are we going to be on the water, in that, for six hours?” she asked France.

“We sure will. Don’t worry, we’ll make it.” France assured her. “We did it before.”

            “Same kind of canoes?”

“Yup. Didn’t have a problem then and don’t think we’ll have one today.” France said stifling a chuckle. “Just sit still and you’ll be all right. If some water splashes in just bail it out.” Cathy’s shocked look is too much and France laughed. “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”

The racial problems of 1962 have found their way to the small West Tennessee town of Humboldt. A white woman has been brutally murdered, and one of Carson’s childhood friends has been accused of the crime. Carson’s friend is a colored man who once worked for his grandfather, but the accusations and problems extend beyond the crime and to the heart of this small community.

Carson finds a divided town; a town divided along the lines of race and the interference of outside groups, which makes this division even wider.

An Excerpt from “Over Her Dead Body” (A Laura and Gerry Mystery, Book 2) by Karen Vaughan

Karen ohdb valentines 2.jpg

“Hi, I’m Laura. I live in Ethel’s building. In fact, Gerry and I are the supers of the complex.”

He held my hand in his and introduced himself.

“My name is Sanford Louis Brown. You, my peach can call me Sandy. Ethel and I were dear friends. In fact, we schooled together at one point. Seems like a lifetime ago.

“Tell me Laura, who would have done this horrible thing to such a warm and loving woman?”

“Sandy the police are going to get to the bottom of it,” I replied, “Inspector Gibbons is a fantastic investigator you can be assured justice will be served.” I shared with him that I had no clue why Ethel had been victimized in such a way.

“I’d like five minutes alone with the SOB who hurt my Ethel,” said Sanford with a frown.

“Just let me kick in his knee caps when the time comes.”

“I have an ‘in’ with Gibbons I’ll see what I can do,” I assured him.

At that point, a statuesque blonde-haired person strode up to Sandy. The woman looked at me like I was poaching on her turf. She was head to toe in Vegas bling but looked like Yonge street hooker trash.

”Sanford!” She yelled with her hands on her hips. “We have to go! I have to be in New York in the morning. We need to catch the Red-eye!”

Sandy sighed and looked at me to bail him out somehow. “She is trying out for the Rockettes,” he whispered to me, just out of Blondie’s earshot, “but between you and me, Leena is a bit long in the tooth for all that. She’s closing in on 40.” Sandy looked at Leena –and then back at me. “Alas, my wife and boss have spoken. The glitzy Mrs. Brown was preening at her compact mirror. “You don’t have to yell Leena,” Sanford addressed her; “I have my hearing aide in.”

Leena looked at me with derision again. “Who’s the floozy?” she sneered.

I was seeing red, and Sandy’s face was turning a similar color.

“Floozy?” I spluttered. I wanted to scratch her eyes out, but I refused to succumb to the base temptation to beat the broad senseless. Sensing an impending catfight, Gerry rushed to my side.

Sandy looked at his wife sternly. “Leena that was tasteless and crass,” he admonished her, “you will apologize to Laura. How dare you defame this funeral of my dear friend Ethel by insulting this lovely girl?”

“Girl my ass,” Leena snarled, “she’s gotta be at least 35.”

If Gerry hadn’t held me back, I would have bitch-slapped her into next week. Okay so I was almost 35, but that wasn’t the point.

Sandy was livid. “I apologize for my wife’s bad behavior. I had better take her out of here.”
He handed me one of his cards and said he would be back in a few days most likely without his spouse.

AN EXCERPT FROM CODER BOOK 5 OF THE PRINCES OF PROPHECY~~L.ANN MARIE

Christian’s burden

His hands go through his hair reminding me of Pres. “I don’t want to add to the fuckin’ circus, but I want to see Christian.” “Maybe you can stop my dad from shooting me.” He smiles. “There’s always that. I’ll check with Ops and see when they’re due. Take Security with you.” I throw him chin and hit my watch. From what I get from Jeremy, nothing jams from our own satellite. I wondered how the government did that. I shake it off and wait for Security to show in the lot. He follows me to the gate. Uncle Danny’s just pulling in and follows me to my house. “You doing okay Brother?” I smile. “I’m fine, it was Jeremy that got hit. It’s just a graze.” He nods and follows me in. Jeremy is on the floor in front of Mucimi with his walker. He’s smiling with his new cup and toys on the tray. “Holly’s with Jess,” he says slow, looking up at me. “Oh fuck.” His eye and cheek are black and blue. My dad’s going to fuckin’ kill me. “What the fuck?” Shit. I put my head down. My dad won’t make it if Uncle Danny’s this close. I look at him. “I hit him for taking off alone today.” He laughs. “About fuckin’ time someone did. He’s going to kill himself riding like he does through traffic.” His eyes get hard. “What’s with the arm?” I don’t say a word. Jeremy waves it away and hands Mucimi a squishy bike. “You shot him?” His voice is deadly. “Fuck no! Pussies aiming for him did before I shot the passenger.” “Jesus Christ, does your father know?” I’m surprised. “Pres didn’t send you?” He shakes his head. “I’m on for Dakota tonight and Jessie tomorrow. Focus Brother. Does your father know?” “Yeah. He’s pissed at me for hitting him.” I grab beer and hand him one. “It won’t last. Mucimi is moving right along here,” he says turning toward the door. Jeremy laughs. I just nod. ”I’ll be back. I’m not on until seven so I’m going to see the kids. Are you making dinner?” “I’ll order you a plate.” I watch him walk out. Fuckin’ crazy. Christian comes in with Nunánuk. He hugs me and pulls Jeremy outside. I hug Nunánuk and kiss her cheek. Mucimi signs ‘grandmother’ making us laugh. She speaks to him in Mohegan. I hear the chopper and know my dad set down at the front of the Compound. Prez walks in with Uncle Danny. They kiss Nunánuk and talk with her. Mucimi watches and I wonder if he understands Mohegan. My dad walks in the garage door when Jeremy and Christian come in the slider. Jeremy has tears on his face and my father jumps to tackle me. “You didn’t just hit him!” Uncle Danny and Prez catch his arms before he reaches me. “I did just hit him. If you were here, you would have too.” “Look at him!” He’s fighting to get his hands on me. Nunánuk moves me and takes Mucimi outside. I watch her and look back at my father. “He was wrong. He had no coverage and took off after I told him to stay.” “You don’t put your hands on him. Look at his fuckin’ face! He was shot!” Christian moves closer to me. “I saw my brothers die today,” he says it so soft and calm my father stops. Uncle Danny and Prez let him go. “Fuck no.” “Jeremy was so focused on cups for Mucimi, he didn’t see and I watched him go right through the windshield of the car. He was dead before the car stopped.” His breath catches. “The pussies were laughing.” I look away. “Stop!” my dad tells him. “No. When he died Taylor did. He was too late and a truck came from the front and shot him. Because he wanted a cup for Mucimi. I won’t stop until you hear me. I watched my brothers die today!” I hug Christian. The fuckin’ hell that plays through his head isn’t fair. He pushes me away. “You saved more than Jeremy. Our family fell apart. He needs to stop treating Jeremy like he’s a little kid. He should have waited. He should have seen Taylor, but all he could see was a fuckin’ cup!” My dad grabs him. “I got it Christian.” He pulls Jeremy to him with his other arm. I walk out the door. “Nunánuk, I need a minute.” She nods and I keep walking.

An excerpt from Africa’s big five wild animals by Anna Othitis

Lions, King of beasts!

Awbumbaway and away we go!

Into the wild countryside resume and go,

together with our guide Delia on his colourful orange motorcycle!

Can you see the great big lion and his family that

Elia has spotted for us?

Quiet now, children, do not frighten them away.

There is a sick, so tall and proud. Kingston mastered of mighty African souls. With eyes so bright and sharp waiting to catch and grasp their prey of the night close to the water hose to feed their family.

Careful now, because they do bite!

They take a rest in sleep in the still of the night under the moonlight with a sky of stars so bright.

THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT

Did you know?

Very interesting, children, did you know that a roar of a lion can be heard as far as 5 miles away?

Lion is from the family of the five big cats (FELIDAE) it is the second-largest cat. Male can weigh as much as 550 pounds and they live in large groups called prides of females and babies with may be up to 15 Lions. Groups of female alliance usually hiked together, praying mostly on large animals such as buffalo and zebra. They sleep mainly during the day and hunt at night.

Winds can be different colours, but mainly have way yellow – brown coats and the mail is recognized by his lovely coloured sometimes black mane around his neck with both beauty and strength.

There different coloured mains can tell us from which country or territory in Africa the male Lions come from. For example the wines from Kenya have black manes.

When the males fight, their thick manes protect their necks from being hurt. Males like their own spaces and will roar and leave scent markings to secure their territory.

Baby cubs stay with their mother for about two years and are taught to hide at the age of 11. Well, children at that age we are going to school and learning and studying.

GRAB BROKEN HEARTS AT AMAZON FOR $3.99

Sebastian had parked his car in the staff area. He slammed the door after killing the engine, and walked into the reception area. “Que?” His voice boomed. He was clearly upset by being brought in so early in the morning. He wasn’t even on call. Young receptionist looked at him in amazement. Her blond hair and falling over her shoulders and as she breathed her uniform showed her breasts clearly she must’ve been new, because she had no name tag yet.

“What?” Sebastian said just as angrily.

“Um…” Where she wanted to tell him disappeared from her lips.

“Okay. I’m sorry I’m angry with something different. It’s not you,” he tried to reassure her but it didn’t seem to be working. Her face was just as pale as when he stormed in, and started to speak in Spanish.

“Dr. Masters, Mrs. Stevenson wants to see,” she finally managed, still afraid of the towering doctor on the other side of the desk. She thought he was going to leave over and strangle her – he had the build for it!

“Mrs. Stevenson” Sebastian pulled back in surprise

what did she want he thought, but as he wanted, Sebastian could only draw one conclusion. He asked receptionist what it was about but she slowly shook her head. “she only told me to send you to her office.” The young woman said.

“Okay.” Sebastian started for the elevators and just as they are open he saw Mrs. Stevenson standing there. His face went ashen.

“I, Dr. Masters,” she agreed them. “Won’t you join me in my office,” Mrs. Stevenson was holding the button to keep the elevator doors open for him Sebastian stepped inside, obviously having no choice. This was his boss after all.

The elevator ride to the top floor of the building was unnervingly silent. Sebastian wanted to ask Mrs. Stevenson what the problem was, but deep down, he had a distinct idea. He just wanted to hear it from her lips and not spill it from his own. He had been fidgety all the way to the top and Mrs. Stevenson – standing like a marble statue – noticed every move he made.

Once inside Mrs. Stevenson’s office, Sebastian noticed another man waiting for them. He looked impatient.

“This is Mr. Hadly, Head of investigations,” she introduced Sebastian to him, and they shook hands. “Please have a seat,” she took her own seat behind her desk.

“Dr. Masters! It’s a pleasure,” he said on a near by whether two-seater. “I’ve heard of your reputation! “

Thank you,” Sebastian said it was suddenly suspicious. “What is this all about?” It was obviously he wanted to get to the root of the matter. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Mr.  Hadly shift uneasily.

When things spiral out of control, will their bond be enough to save the entire community, or will rival forces strip away all that they have worked for at the time they need it most…

Walking across to the wall on the end, where the gym lay, they paused. Drawing a deep breath, Caleb puffed the warm air into his hands, “You realize you are never t’ speak to anyone about anything you see today. Understand?” He turned enough that he faced her squarely, waiting as if he had all day.
“Yes, of course,” she opened her palms to the ceiling, the suspense killing her. “I won’t ever tell anyone,” she added with a small smile while her hand flicked, “Cross my heart.”
Reaching out to the slats that covered the wall, he slid his finger along one of the boards, applying pressure, and it popped up in a small section, exposing a keypad, which he quickly punched in his code. The device made a long beep, and a large section of the partition swung away from them, exposing a staircase that went down into the darkness.

“Carson,” Marcie said hanging up her phone, “Bert Sappington is in Joe’s office, and they both need to see you immediately.”
“Yeah, Joe has already called me this morning, I guess this might get interesting,” I said to no one.
“Well, they sure seem excited about something,” Marcie offered.
“Marcie, I need you to call Liz Teague and tell her that I’m in a meeting and won’t be available for several hours.”
“It’s too late.: Marcie was shaking her head.
“Too late…what do you mean too late?”
“She has already called and left a message. You want it now?” Marcie asked peeking over her glasses.
“Oh shit,” I frowned. “Okay, what was the message?”
“She said to tell you to meet her for lunch at the Rendezvous at noon. That’s exactly 45 minutes from now!”
“Great. That’s just great!” I said as I headed to Joe’s office.
